Brazilian city gets rushed makeover ahead of COP30

We are in Belem, what is known as the metropolis of the Amazon. In reality, this is an urban expanse of 1.3 million people, and it's one of the least shady cities in Brazil. But this is where Brazil chose to host the COP 30 climate conference, the world's biggest climate conference.
Hosting the conference won't be easy. This is a city that suffers from gridlock. It has a small airport. There aren't nearly enough hotel rooms to host the estimated 50,000 people that are going to arrive in the city.
They're using the mega event to accelerate nearly $1 billion worth of public works projects. It won't be easy. The city is turning to creative solutions to find enough housing for all the people it expects to come to the conference. One entrepreneur is converting shipping containers into housing units to provide space for all the people who are coming.
But one thing's for sure: by the end of November, when all the dignitaries and climate negotiators leave Belem, this will be a completely different city.
